Restorative Justice Mock Facilitation Demonstration
Watch experienced RJC Registered restorative practitioners, Becky Childs and Paul Shaw, conduct a mock restorative justice ‘conference’ to show how they would facilitate a meeting between a person who caused harm and the person they have harmed.
This mock facilitation was produced by the RJC in collaboration with Dr Jane Bryan, University of Warwick.
We thank Martha and Sin-Heng, University of Warwick performing arts students, who played the conference participants and to our practitioners, Becky and Paul, from Restorative Cleveland - Safer Communities.
About Becky Childs
I’ve been managing the Restorative Cleveland service since 2018. The service is one of several projects delivered by Safer Communities, providing us with the opportunity to work closely with Victim Care Officers and trauma-informed practitioners, to offer truly integrated support. As part of my role, I provide Case Supervision and hold my own caseload as a Registered Advanced Practitioner. We’re a small team but are incredibly passionate about restorative practice and in ensuring that we provide a high-quality service. I feel it’s a real privilege to work so closely with individuals harmed by crime and those identified as responsible for offending against them, with the aim of restoring the harm caused. Gaining an insight into both sides of the offence, the different perspectives held by the parties involved and the array of experienced thoughts, feelings and impacts. The ability to be able to unpick this very much appeals to my background in Forensic Psychology and in wanting to prevent further victims of crime, through effective offender rehabilitation.
About Paul Shaw
My name is Paul Shaw and I’ve been with the Restorative Cleveland service since 2017 after being with Stockton Youth Offending team for ten years prior. I became a facilitator in 1997 whilst serving as a Prison officer. The service is one of several projects delivered by Safer Communities, providing us with the opportunity to work closely with Victim Care Officers and trauma-informed practitioners, to offer truly integrated support. As well has supporting my Manager I have a caseload and work sensitive and complex cases. I am a registered advanced practitioner. Our team is small with a varied experience that enhances our practice, always striving to promote, share experiences and achieve excellent outcomes for our participants. Working with people who have experienced crime and those who have committed them is a rewarding experience. We pride ourselves in ensuring we build resilient pathways and challenge ourselves and services involved in the criminal justice system, to recognise the power of giving participants a real voice.
