Belong is keen to recruit Trustees (no previous experience as Trustee required, we’ll support you with that), who have knowledge related to Organisational Development and scaling small organisations and fundraising, but we are open to all who believe they can make a difference. We welcome applications from those with lived experiences representative of the community we work with, which includes and is not limited to; former offenders, particularly BAME, LGBTQAI, and care leavers.

Overview of the Charity:

Belong’s vision is of hope, rehabilitation and recovery for victims and perpetrators of crime. Our mission is to inspire change by providing long term, individualised responses to conflict and crime through Restorative Justice, Psychotherapy, mentoring, training and service user involvement. 2021 marked our tenth anniversary, and there is much for us to celebrate!

Growing steadily from our London based beginnings, we now support hundreds of victims, perpetrators, and criminal justice staff per year. We are currently working in eight prisons and several community settings. Our ambitions are to continue to grow our reach, to be a provider of choice within the Criminal Justice System, and to offer powerfully unique change opportunities to even more people.

About You:

You ideally have skills or knowledge related to Organisational Development, scaling a small organisation, and fundraising; and / or relevant lived experiences but we are open to all applications.

You will volunteer around five hours per month and be able to be flexible to fulfil specific projects. Visiting prisons and community justice settings is something you will be comfortable to do. You will actively participate in trustee meetings which take place every two weeks, remotely or in person at a venue in London Bridge, from 6-8/8.30pm on weekday evenings.

The statutory duties of a trustee are:

  • To ensure the organisation complies with its governing document To ensure that the organisation pursues its charitable objectives as defined in its governing document.
  • To ensure the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives - the charity must not spend money on activities that are not included in its own objectives, no matter how 'charitable' and 'worthwhile' those activities are.
  • To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees' role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
  • To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation.
  • To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
  • To ensure the financial stability of the organisation.
  • To protect and manage the property of the organisation and to ensure the proper investment of the organisation's funds.
  • Collectively the trustees to hold the charity “in trust” for current and future beneficiaries by:
    • Ensuring that the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these.
    • Being responsible for the performance of the charity and for its “corporate” behaviour; ensuring that the charity complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
    • Acting as guardians of the charity’s assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment and proper application.
    • Ensuring that the charity’s governance is of the highest possible standard.

Belong’s Trustees responsibilities also include:

Supporting working group activities aligned to individual projects relevant to their skillset, as needed Signing off on the organisational policies and procedures Attending 6 board meetings per year Preparing for Board meetings by reading papers in advance of the meeting Adhering to the confidentiality requirements of the Trustee role Acting as an Ambassador for Belong

About the Role

Location: Remote, with options for face-to-face trustee meetings in Central London and some visits to prison and community settings.

Hours: 5 hours per month

Salary: Voluntary
