This week marks the first anniversary of the launch of the Restorative Service Quality Mark (RSQM).

Fourteen organisations, from a range of sectors, received the RSQM during its first year and a steady growth in applications shows that the RSQM is gaining momentum. Awardees include youth offending teams, schools, a prison, mediation services and a secure children’s home.

The RJC awards the RSQM to organisations that demonstrate that they are meeting the six nationally recognised Restorative Service Standards.

With the aim of providing quality services to anyone taking part in a restorative process, the RSQM gives individuals the confidence that they will receive a safe and effective service.

The Restorative Justice Unit at London Probation achieved the RSQM during the test phase and has now held the RSQM for over a year. Liz Dixon, the restorative justice co-ordinator at London Probation’s Restorative Justice Unit, says: “We feel we have renewed legitimacy with our service users and are reassured that we’re on the right track. An important factor is that the award has bolstered the confidence of our facilitators when approaching ‘harmers’ and ‘the harmed’. It’s empowered us.”

As well as ensuring those harmed receive adequate help and support, the RSQM also serves as a way of recognising and celebrating the excellent work of organisations. Becci Seaborne from Thames Valley Restorative Justice Service said: "The RSQM is really worth it. I think it gives you a sense of achievement. It also enables you to benchmark against other organisations. And it’s an opportunity to tell your colleagues and your peers and wider colleagues within your sector about the fantastic work you are doing."
