The RJC is pleased to announce the publication of a new guide on restorative justice for the police. The police have a vital role to play both in delivery of restorative justice for low level offences and in sharing victims’ details to enable restorative justice to go ahead in more serious cases.

The guide outlines some of the key considerations for police forces when delivering restorative justice. It covers the role that the police can play, how the police can support quality in delivery, and how to deal with sensitive and complex cases. The booklet also clarifies some of the main confusions around defining restorative justice, and the difference between restorative justice and community resolution.

Jon Collins, the RJC’s chief executive, said: “The police are responsible for a significant proportion of the restorative justice delivered in England and Wales. The importance of their role cannot be overstated. This guide has been written to support consistency and quality in this delivery.

“We have sent this guide to every chief constable in England and Wales. It provides them with a checklist to ensure that their officers are delivering a consistently high quality service for the benefit of both victims and offenders.”
