Are you a magistrate? Become a restorative justice champion and spread the word on your bench
The Restorative Justice Council is looking for magistrates to act as champions and spokespeople for restorative justice.
Our recent champions initiative saw the successful recruitment of a range of individuals from across the criminal justice sector and we are now looking to broaden our reach into the judiciary.
We would like sentencers to understand the positive impact restorative justice can have on the rehabilitation of offenders and the opportunity it provides for victims to move on.
The role of a magistrate champion:
- To raise awareness and inform fellow magistrates on the benefits of restorative justice.
- To suggest an assessment for restorative justice for cases you deem appropriate.
- To promote and encourage restorative justice in your local justice area.
Champions will help:
- Answer queries on restorative justice related to the magistracy as they arise locally.
- Feedback to the RJC positive outcomes from its use in the magistrates’ court.
- Attend, and/or speak at, relevant local meetings in your community.
The restorative justice magistrates champion can expect to:
- Be invited to attend consultation meetings related to restorative justice and the magistracy.
- Be consulted on new initiatives by the RJC that may impact on magistrates.
- Be invited to attend RJC events.
- Receive updates from the RJC.
- Be a part of RJC campaigns, events and activities.
- Be mentors or supporters for people new to the field.
