SEND & the Restorative Movement
UNIQUE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER: RJC18102004
The RJC, in collaboration with The Restorative Lab and Restorative Relationships, are holding an innovative Open Space Technology event to explore the inter-relationship between restorative practice/restorative justice and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
We will work with Open Space methodology, which offers a framework for the people in the room to ask the questions that are important to them and for those questions to then guide the course of the day. The day is strongly participatory, experiential and generative. We anticipate this initial day will lead to future focusses and activities.
This event is aimed at all colleagues working in the restorative field, including youth and adult justice, social care, health, education and community settings. The aim is to come together as a community to progress thinking and practice around RP/RJ and SEND.
Participants will:
- Actively experience an Open Space Technology event focused on the SEND and restorative movement.
- Connect with and learn from colleagues working in the fields.
- Broaden and deepen understanding of the inter-relationship between restorative practice and additional needs.
- Learn what is already being undertaken in terms of quality practice.
- Identify key areas for future development within RP and SEND.
The event will take place at a central London venue on Friday 18 October 2024 from 10:00-15:00.
ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS
Supporting schools, students and families to make sense of complex cases and create restorative and collaborative solutions.
Restorative Relationships work with schools to develop a restorative approach to managing and understanding learning and behaviour of students - particularly those with complex special education needs and disabilities.
Frances Jessie, founder of Restorative Relationships, is a restorative and special education trainer with 30 years working and teaching in mainstream and special schools in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Experienced at senior and specialist levels she passionately believes in giving students with challenges a voice through a strongly collaborative approach borne from a commitment to restorative practices and experiences working with students with SEND and their families.
The Restorative Lab is Dr Terence Bevington, Dr Anna Gregory and Tom Mellor, all experienced restorative practitioners with a collective 40 years’ experience of restorative facilitation, training and consultation. The Lab is actively engaged in building research-based practice as well as drawing on research evidence in how they work. They work with diverse organisations such as schools, universities, local authorities and charities. The Lab actively contributes to promoting, extending, and challenging the restorative practice field through their international conference contributions and authored publications. Their working methods are grounded in participatory action research, co-creation and creative experiential learning.
