Restorative Practice in cases of adolescent harmful sexual behaviour

A three day skills based course to enable experience RJ staff to safely facilitate a restorative approach in cases of adolescent harmful sexual behaviour

Participants: Youth offending restorative justice staff, those working in specialist HSB projects or roles that might include a responsibility for issues relating to both the offender and the victim and those working in a therapeutic context who wish to explore how restorative models can be adapted to be inclusive of family issues/concerns in relation to HSB.

AIM

  • To enable participants to have a clear understanding of restorative approaches and their use in sensitive and complex cases which involve Harmful Sexual Behaviour.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To provide an understanding of the values and principles underpinning RJ in this context.
  • To develop knowledge of the practice/methodology employed in RJ to facilitate communication in cases of HSB.
  • To consider the familial harm and impact that occurs in cases of HSB and what families might gain from participation in the process.
  • To practice the skills necessary to run a safe mediation session in cases of HSB.
  • To understand the importance of an assessment led approach using the AIM RJ/HSB Assessment framework.
  • To consider how the restorative practice can support any parallel therapeutic intervention/support for both the victim and the offender.

Methodology:

  • The course will run over three days facilitated by two trainers.
  • The focus is practice/skill orientated so will involve role playing.
  • The maximum group size will be 20 delegates.
  • The training will employ a mixture of training methods including directpresentations, small group work, case studies, role plays, dvd and will be supported by written training materials, reference to further reading and a single copy of the AIM RJ Assessment framework to the commissioning agency.
  • All training is consistent with the National Standards of Best.

Restorative Practice (RJC and the Home Office 2012) and will assist in practice accreditation.

Please note: This training makes a presumption that staff will have been trained in direct restorative techniques such as Mediation and/or Restorative Conferencing, it is not designed for those without any experience and previous training in this field.
