Seminar: Restorative practices and approaches in Tasmania
This presentation will look at the criminal justice system in Tasmania and explore the development of restorative justice processes in the youth justice, policing and child welfare services.
The effects of restorative justice/approaches in various other government departments such as the judicial, education and public services will also be explored to build an understanding of how implementation of social change is achieved from the grass roots in a small community. It will touch on the future use of restorative approaches in prisons and family violence settings.
Some of the legislation supporting this social change will also be explored, as well as the ways in public participation has contributed to the developing use of restorative practices in the state of Tasmania.
The presenter John Lennox is a former police officer who has had 30 years’ experience in community policing, training and conferencing with juvenile offenders. He was an early advocate of conferencing in Tasmania Police and has been largely responsible for training of Authorized Police Officers since 1997. He has contributed to national and international debates in the field of restorative justice for many years.
On retiring from Tasmania Police in 2007 he (with Les Drelich the former manager of Youth Justice) formed a partnership, JLD Restorative Practices. The partners have since developed a collective experience in working restoratively with young offenders, schools and in workplaces as well as delivering training. They have worked across Tasmanian schools in assisting with the implementation of the Respectful Schools/Respectful Behaviour policy and also developing the use of restorative processes in government Departments and private enterprise.
John is a Director of Restorative Practices International (www.rpiassn.org) and has chaired the Tasmanian Chapter of that organization. He was convenor of the 2015 RPI National Conference in Hobart.
