Registered Restorative Educational Setting

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Registered Restorative Educational Setting with the RJC. Our Educational Setting Registration is a national standard for schools, colleges, universities, and other learning environments that prioritise high-quality restorative and relational practices.

By achieving Registered Restorative Educational Setting status, your organisation will receive formal recognition for integrating restorative principles into its culture, systems, and daily activities. This commitment helps create inclusive, safe, and supportive learning communities for everyone.

In order to apply for Registration, you will need to hold a current RJC Organisational or Charitable Membership.

Below you will find further details of how your educational setting can become registered with the RJC.

Why should you apply to become a Registered Restorative Educational Setting?

In a world where inclusion, wellbeing, and accountability are crucial, restorative practice offers a strong, values-based foundation for school culture. By registering with the RJC, your organisation demonstrates its commitment to positive, relationship-focused change and showcases its leadership in fostering a supportive environment.

Who should apply for Registered Restorative Educational Setting status?

A restorative educational setting practices restorative principles within its own organisation but may not engage in restorative processes outside of it. This registration framework is intended for:

  • Primary and secondary schools
  • Alternative provision settings
  • Colleges and further education providers
  • Universities
  • Any learning environment that prioritises building relationships and resolving conflicts

If you are an educational academy trust looking to register multiple schools and/or over multiple locations, please contact us at Standards@restorativejustice.org.uk to discuss your needs.

The RJC Registered Restorative Educational Framework

This Framework sets out how a restorative educational setting should work. We have been careful to ensure that it does not constrain practice or hamper creativity and the need for services to develop and exercise their professional judgement. This Framework has been designed to be flexible so that it applies across different types of restorative practice without being overly prescriptive.

The Framework is broken into five performance indicators with each indicator consisting of a number of standards which outline the requirements educational settings are required to evidence.

  1. Leadership & Culture
    1. Vision
    2. Culture
    3. Physical & Psychological Environment
    4. Policy
  2. Workforce Development and Support
    1. Training
    2. Support
  3. Delivery
    1. Proactive Practice
    2. Reactive Practice
    3. Quality Assurance
  4. Evaluation and Impact
    1. Evaluation Processes
    2. Analysing and Using Data
  5. Maintaining professional standards
    1. Adhering to the RJC’s Organisation Code of Practice

*Some educational settings may have practitioners who are leading direct or formal restorative processes. If this is the case, the educational setting should also apply for Practitioner Registration for each of the individuals undertaking direct restorative work.

The Registration Process

Over approximately 12 weeks, your organisation will collaborate with an experienced assessor to:

1. Submit a reflective Portfolio Record.

2. Collect Practice Evidence Statements from staff and young people.

3. Deliver a presentation about your educational setting.

4. Sign and adopt the RJC Restorative Educational Setting Code of Practice.

All evidence gathering and discussions are focused on being supportive, developmental, and aligned with real-world practice—not simply box-ticking exercises.

After you submit your Registration Application, you will receive a copy of the RJC's Registered Restorative Educational Setting Application Guidance. This document outlines the guidance and evidence requirements for each indicator.

Once you have compiled your educational setting and practitioner/stakeholder evidence, you will need to submit your portfolio for assessment. Your assessor will review the submitted documentation and may reach out to request additional evidence or to schedule a discussion about what you have provided.

You will receive an assessment report from your assessor detailing whether your registration application has been successful. If you are awarded Registered status, your educational setting will be added to our Practice Register, and you will receive your Registered Restorative Educational Setting certificate and logos. If your application is unsuccessful, your assessor will provide a detailed explanation of the reasons.
