Ministry of Justice evaluation: implementing restorative justice schemes (Crime Reduction Programme) final report

This is the final report from the evaluation of three restorative justice schemes: CONNECT, the Justice Research Consortium (JRC) and REMEDI, published in 2008.

Published in June 2008, it looks at trials that began in 2001.

It covers the results of the research, highlighting both the positive impact of restorative justice on reducing reconviction rates and the cost-effectiveness of the intervention.

The report shows:

  • a significant decrease in the frequency of reconviction over the following two years, looking over all the trials, schemes and groups
  • offenders’ reoffending decelerated
  • restorative justice can produce costs savings – from £1 per £1 spent on it to £9 per £1 spent on it depending on the setting
