Criminal Justice Restorative Practitioner
This hybrid working role is an excellent opportunity to increase your current experience of working with young people and adult offenders and victims of crime. The Remedi Cheshire team and services has been expanding over the last couple of years, and this is a great opportunity to join an exciting, innovative and dedicated team of practitioners delivering various services across the whole of Cheshire.
Your role will involve supporting individuals to understand the cause of their conflict and you will work with them to enable them to communicate effectively with each other, through Restorative Justice. This process helps reduce harm and enables individuals to move forward from what has happened. It can be facilitated through a face-to-face meeting or by acting as a go-between to pass messages between each party.
You will also be required to carry out 1:1 Restorative Awareness sessions with offenders who are on Probation.
As part of this contract, Remedi work closely with Prisons and Probation. You may also be required to deliver briefings to staff, and offenders about our RJ service and RA Sessions in the community and in custody.
Additionally, you will be required to support the Got your Back Service and work with young people who have been affected by crime. It may also be required that you support the team and contract and deliver interventions outlined under the Cheshire Police Role, such as delivery of CTEV, Hate Crime Perp Programme, Restorative Awareness sessions, plus any others added to this portfolio as this service expands.
The skills and qualities you will need to do the job well are:
COMMUNICATION: Listening and responding to what is being said so that people feel supported, valued and prepared to engage in a restorative intervention is an essential part of this role. There will also be an expectation that your first contact with people will be via a telephone call, so being able to engage with people over the phone is vital.
FLEXIBILITY: Working with people requires a flexible approach to ensure they are seen at times convenient to them; this can involve working on evenings and weekends. In return, we don’t expect you to work a rigid 9-5 Monday-Friday working week. You will be expected to manage your diary effectively and be prepared to travel across the county (and occasionally other parts of the country). This is a hybrid working role with work from home and out and about in person.
MOTIVATION: Well facilitated restorative interventions change lives for the better. We want you to do that. The nature of the role means generating work through phone calls, visiting victims at their home, seeing offenders in the community or prison and working in close partnership with other agencies. You are going to be out and about a lot. It is not the type of job where you are going to be sat at a desk all day with your manager down the hall. You will have to work from your own initiative and make judgements that take into account the needs of the people you are working with, your own workload and the specific contract requirements.
There will be expectations on the amount of restorative work we want you to do. We want you to be the type of person that will see this as a challenge you want to meet because when it is achieved, lives are changed.
IT CAPABLE: We want restorative practitioners to spend the majority of their time working with people. There is however a responsibility to record information accurately and promptly. As a result it is essential that you are proficient in using:
- Electronic calendar
- Word
- Excel
- Skype
- Microsoft Teams
- Whats App video / audio
Recording the work is vital in showcasing the great work you will be doing and is often a contract requirement.
SAFETY: We want you to work safely in all aspects of the role, including basic health and safety, safeguarding for all concerned, data protection and risk assessment. Full training will be provided in all of these aspects and we will be looking for someone committed to achieving high standards in regard to all of these issues.
WHAT TO EXPECT: The role covers several locations across Cheshire. Expenses are covered but to be considered for the role, you must have a full UK driving licence and have access to your own vehicle.
Remedi will provide:
- Full training
- A laptop and mobile phone
- Line management support and guidance
- DBS and police vetting
- Starting salary of £21,091 (Actual £12,052) rising to £23,338 (Actual £13,336) at the end of Year 2 in role
- 6% employer pension contribution
- 25 days leave per annum plus bank holidays.
