Excellence in Restorative Practice – Raising the bar together
The Restorative Justice Unit warmly invite you to their special forum on:
Date: Thursday 23 November 2017
Time: 1.30pm – 4.30pm
Venue: The Crypt, St George the Martyr Church, Borough High Street, London SE1 1JA
(Please note, entrance to the Crypt is at the back of the Church building)
We are hosting the event in rhythm with International Restorative Justice Week, this year's theme being 'inspiring innovation'. The theme of our forum is 'Excellence in Restorative Practice - Raising the bar together'.
As well as showcasing some of our work in the RJ Unit, including the development of the Making Amends Rolling RAR programme, we are bringing together Restorative Justice Practitioners, probation staff and partnership organisations across London to share and learn from one another's best practice, expertise and innovation.
Other highlights include The Forgiveness Project exhibition, including powerful art work and poetry by women in prison, completed as part of the restorative programme, RESTORE.
We are fortunate to be joined by guest speaker Brian Dowling, a practicing restorative facilitator since 1999 and one of the primary specialists on serious crime and restorative justice. He retired from a 32-year career as Chief Inspector with London's Metropolitan Police Service. Prior to retirement he was engaged in developing the London police policy on youth crime from New Scotland Yard where he introduced restorative dialogues into cautioning.
Following this he operationally managed a rigorous international research project to establish the effects of Restorative Justice Conferencing on serious crime in London.
From 2004 to 2016 Brian had been the Managing Director of his own company, fairprocess Ltd, providing restorative facilitation, consultancy and training to many hundreds of people including in Australia, India, Uruguay, Trinidad, Bahrain and the UK. He continues to practice restorative work and has facilitated face-to-face meetings in cases of brutal historic rape and murder. Brian also advises on service delivery of restorative justice/practice to organisations, including projects involving domestic violence.
